RocketDock – Portable Application Launcher

RocketDock is a Free Program Launcher that can be stored and run from a Portable Device. The Portable Start Menu or Portable Application Launcher resembles a Mac OSX Dock and can be used to launch programs via the shortcuts you create by simply dragging and dropping application executables onto RocketDock.

In essence, RocketDock could be used as a portable dock to launch the portable applications stored on your USB device.

How to Make RocketDock Portable:

1. Download RocketDock
2. Install RocketDock to the default path on your computer
3. Copy the C:\Program Files\RocketDock folder to your USB device
4. Use RocketDock.exe to launch the program
5. Click Dock Settings > General and then select the option to Store Settings in a Portable INI file

Note: You can now uninstall RocketDock from your PC if you like and continue to use your portable version of the application launcher.

SyMenu – Portable Start Menu

SyMenu is a Portable Start Menu for USB devices. It can be used much like a Windows Start button to quickly launch your portable software applications and programs from the USB device. Registering new applications to be added to the SyMenu right click menu is a simple drag and drop affair, making SyMenu Portable Start Menu a very intuitive and super easy to use USB Launcher.

Internet Connection Test via NetCheck

NetCheck is a Free, simple Internet Connection Tester. It can be used to "check the status of your internet connection" by attempting DNS resolve and TCP connection tests. The DNS test allows NetCheck to test if your system can currently resolve Internet addresses to their respective numeric IP addresses, and the TCP test determines if your system is able to connect to servers on the Internet. Just launch NetCheck and press the Start button to run the test.

CPU Info Utility – Crystal CPUID

CrystalCPUID  is a Free Portable CPU Utility that can be used to display CPU Info. Important processor related information such as CPU Name, Code Name, Vendor Sting, Name String, Microcode ID, Stepping, Clock Speed, System Bus, Multiplier, L1, l2 and l3 cache and more. System BIOS, Version, Chipset and Motherboard information is also available. Moreover, you can manage your multiplier in some cases. This option did not work in Vista for us.

BootIt – Lexar USB Flip the Removable Media Bit Tool

BootIt is a tool offered by Lexar that enables a user to format a USB flash drive, set a volume label, set a (bootable) active partition and most importantly, "Flip the Removable Media Bit" (RMB) on the USB device to allow windows to see the USB device as a fixed disk, rather than removable media. Flipping the Removable Media Bit on a USB flashdrive will allow a user to setup, see and use multiple partitions on the USB flashdrive from Windows. This tool was developed for Lexar drives. However, we have had success using the Flip the Removable Bit feature on various brands of USB flash drives.

Oiko Visual CSS editor – Portable CSS

Oiko Visual CSS editor is a Free Portable CSS editor.  It is essentially a visual CSS editor that helps you edit or design your style sheet (CSS) code from a visual or graphical interface without the need to know code. Autoruns – Startup Monitor

Autoruns is a startup monitor application that can show you what programs have been configured to run during system bootup. It shows you the entries in the order Windows processes them. SUPER – Media Player Encoder and Renderer

SUPER (Simplified Universal Player Encoder & Renderer) can be used to convert one type of media format to another. SUPER can convert IPod and mobile formats as well making it a great tool for those who use portable media players. SUPER currently supports the following 3GP/3G2, ASF, AVI, FLI, FLC, FLV, MPG, MOV, MP4, OGG, QT, RM, STR, SWF, VIV, VOB, WMV, AC3, AAC, AMR, MP2, MP3, MP4, OGG, RA, WMA media formats.

This is a larger application (27MB), but can easily be made portable and will fit on the most common of USB portable devices.


How to install SUPER to a Portable USB device:

1. Download SUPER and install to your PC
2. Navigate to the directory SUPER was installed to example: C:\Program Files\eRightSoft\SUPER and copy the contents of the SUPER folder to your USB device (You don't need to copy Setup.exe and Setup.ini)
3. Launch Setup.exe from your portable device to Run SUPER portably

SMPlayer – Portable Media Player

SMPlayer is a free Portable Media Player (based on MPlayer) that can be run from a portable device such as a USB flash drive. Outside of playing DVDs, Movies and VCDs, one really cool feature of SMPlayer is that it remembers the settings for each individual file you play. So you can resume your movies from where you left off with the same volume, subtitles and other settings.

How to install SMPlayer to your USB Device

1. Download the SMPlayer Portable Zip
2. Extract the contents of the zip to your USB device
3. Click smplayer.exe from the smplayer-portabe directory on your USB device to launch the program

KMPlayer – Portable Media Player

KMPlayer is a Free Portable Media Player that can be run entirely from a USB device. It can be used to play many popular file formats, including DVD, VCD, AVI, ASF, MKV, MP4, MPEG, OGM, WMF, RealMedia, Quicktime and almost every audio file without installing additional codecs. In some cases, KMPlayer can play incomplete, damaged or even locked AVI or media files that are still being downloaded.

Coccinella – Portable Instant Messenger

Coccinella is a cross platform Portable Instant Messenger or Portable IM with a built in whiteboard that incorporates the following features. Secured connections, avatars and emoticons, plugins, open standard instant messaging, multi user chat (group chat) and file transfers. Coccinella is also multilingual open source software. This Portable Instant Messenger can be run from a USB device on Linux, Mac or Windows via the corresponding binaries.

How to install and run Coccinella from a USB device

1. Download the Coccinella_Messenger-0.96.8Win.zip and extract to a folder on your USB device
2. Click Coccinella Messenger-0.96.8.exe from the Coccinella folder on your USB device to launch the Portable Instant Messenger
3. Follow the onscreen instructions to setup or connect to your server
4. Once up and running, navigate to File -> Preferences and check the option to Store preferences in same folder as program and click Save

Miranda – Portable Instant Messenger

Miranda is another great Portable Instant Messenger application. Like Pidgin, it supports AIM, ICQ, IRC, MSN and Jabber, however, Miranda also sports a plugin system that allows you to include other popular instant messaging protocols like Gadu-Gadu, Netsend, Skype, Yahoo and more. The unique plugin system also allows the user to add additional features such as Clock, Weather and RSS Feed Reader. This Instant Messaging application can also be run portably from a USB flash drive or other portable device.

Inkscape – Portable Vector Graphics Editor

Inkscape is an FREE Open Source portable vector graphics editor that sports drawing tool features typically found in applications like Adobe Illustrator, Xara X, CorelDraw and Freehand. Some key SVG features include, shapes, paths, text, clones, blending, transforms, gradients, patterns and grouping. Inkscape can be stored and run directly from a portable USB device and should be a part of every graphical editors collection.

Font Matcher – Match a Font

Font Matcher is a Free portable Match a Font utility that enables you to match a font from a image or picture. Font Matcher accepts fonts that are in .BMP (bitmap) format. To use the tool, simply take a bitmap image of the letter, select your fonts directory and click Find. Font Matcher will proceed to compare each TTF with your bitmap, listing the font matches by percentage for your bitmap. You can then your suitable font from the matches found.

RealWorld Paint – Portable Image Editor

RealWorld Paint is a Portable Image Editor or Free Photo Editor. Much like Photoshop and other high end editors, this freeware graphical editor allows it's user to edit pictures using layers and assign custom effects to every layer. A layer can have an added text effect, a 3D bevel effect, transparency and much more. One really cool feature of the graphical editing tool is that it always displays a 100% accurate preview of the drawn shape regardless of zoom factor. Tooltips are displayed throughout the user interface to explain meaning of controls.

Image Resizer – SmillaEnlarger

Portable Python – Portable Programming

Portable Python is an Open Source portable development tool based on the Python 2.5 programming language. Portable Python has been configured to run directly from a portable device such as a USB flash drive or thumbdrive. This enables a user to bring the Python programming environment with them and create Python applications from any computer they may be working with.

How to install and run Portable Python:

1. Download [ftp] [http] the Portable Python zip file
2. Extract the contents of the zip to your portable USB device
3. Navigate to the "Portable Python" directory and click "PortablePython.bat" or any of the other tools to launch the program

Portable Java – Run Java from a flashdrive

Portable JDK. If your tired of installing the Java Runtime Environment on every computer you want to work on, this Portable Java tutorial is for you. It explains how to install Java on a USB Memory Stick. Enabling a user to bring Java with them. Moreover, portable programming tools such as portable netbeans can then use the portable JDK environment, eliminating the need to have JDK installed on the host machine.

Run Java from a Flashdrive – Portable JDK:

Upon completion, the user should be able to run Java from a flashdrive. The installation process does take some time, however, once completed is well worth the investment.

1. Go to the Java Downloads Page and click the Download button next to the latest JDK Update for Windows. We used JDK 6 Update 7
2. On the next page, under platform, select "Windows", agree to the License agreement and click Continue
3. On the next page, download the "Windows Offline Installation" package
4. Once the download is complete, run the file and accept the license agreement
5. From the Custom Setup menu, install only the Development Tools and Demos and Samples and then Click Change to change the installation path:

6. Next, enter the destination for the Portable JDK install. For Example F:/JDK/, then click Ok to continue:

7. Now, click Next and the installer will install Java to your USB flash drive:

8. Next, download this js.bat file and save it to the root of your USB flash drive
9. To test that Java is now running from your flash drive, do the following:
   
   • Double click the js.bat file from your flash drive
   • Now simply type javac (to get a list of compiler options)

WindowSpy

WindowSpy is a Free Portable application that can display window information for any window the mouse is hovered over. Commonly referred to as a HandleSpy or VBSpy program, Window Spy displays the Current Handle, Current Class, Current Text, Current Size, Parent Handle, Parent Text and Pixel Color of the select Window. This information can then be used within the Win32 API to control the application or program.

Avanti GUI is a free portable audio video conversion tool with a graphical front end. It allows a user to convert for example: "FFmpeg codecs" such as Mpeg, AVI, Xvid formats. Avanti GUI offers user friendly control over all basic and advanced FFmpeg options. This portable video editing tool is used in conjunction with FFmpeg and offers the option to run Avisynth as the pre processor. FFmpeg includes libavcodec, the leading open source codec library for encoding and decoding audio/video.

How to run Avanti GUI from a USB flash drive:

1. Download the Avanti GUI 7zip file and extract it's contents to your USB flash drive
2. Download the FFmpeg 7zip file and extract it's contents to the ffmpeg subfolder on your USB flash drive
3. Launch Avanti GUI via the Avanti-GUI.exe
